Introduction
The world is filled with countless festivals from the Olympics to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, there’s always something fun happening. For example, did you know that New Year’s Eve in London has been celebrated since 1066? Or that Oktoberfest started in Munich as a wedding gift for the royal family? Since these events are so special, we wanted to share our top ten favorite festivals around the globe!
The Proms
The Proms is a series of concerts held annually in the Royal Albert Hall, London, England. The Proms were founded in 1895 by Henry Wood and are now organised by the BBC. This was formally named the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts.
The event is a combination of popular classical music (including full symphonies) and light classics with an emphasis on British music, but also includes jazz, world music, folk music and contemporary composers such as John Adams.
The Olympics
The Olympics are a sporting event that brings together athletes from around the world. They’re held every four years, although they were originally held every four years starting in 1896. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece and featured 241 athletes from 13 countries competing in 43 events (23 for men and 20 for women). Today there are nearly 10,000 events and over 40 million people watching them on TV!
The Olympic Games have been hosted by many different cities around the world: London (1908), Antwerp (1920), Paris (1924), Amsterdam (’28), Los Angeles (’32) Berlin (’36), Tokyo (’64) Montreal (’76).
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the biggest party on earth. It’s a huge celebration of dance, music and costumes that takes place every year before Lent begins. The first day of Carnival is called ‘Domingo de Ramos’ (Sunday of Ram). This is when people start wearing their costumes and masks for the first time during this festival.
The next five days are called ‘sexta-feira,’ or ‘Friday.’ They’re filled with parties all over Rio de Janeiro where everyone has fun dancing together at night until late into the night! You’ll see lots of different kinds of costumes during these days; some people dress up as famous singers while others might wear animal masks like dogs or cats because they want something cute but also scary at the same time!
Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany
Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It’s the world’s largest fair and attracts about 6 million visitors every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture with more than 500 000 people attending it every day during its 16 days run.
The history of this festival dates back to 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on October 12th at Munich’s Odeonplatz (now called Theresienwiese). As part of their wedding celebrations, they held a horse race but only invited men from all over Bavaria who could afford to participate in such an event at the time. This first Oktoberfest celebration was so successful that it was repeated annually until 1817 when Prussia invaded Munich due to Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo and forced King Maximilian I Joseph III into exile; thus ending his rule over Bavaria which lasted for 50 years up until then!
New Year’s Eve in London, England
London is the biggest party in the world, and New Year’s Eve is no exception. There are multiple events that you can attend to celebrate the new year, but nothing beats watching fireworks light up London’s skyline as you celebrate with hundreds of thousands of people who have come from all over the world to enjoy this spectacle together.
Carnival in Venice, Italy
The Carnival in Venice is one of the most famous festivals in Italy. It takes place every year on Shrove Tuesday and runs until Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. The celebration has been going on for centuries and attracts millions of tourists each year.
The main event takes place on the streets of Venice where people dress up as masked characters known as “carnevaleschi” or “burlamacchi”. They roam around town playing music and dancing until late at night when they finally get some sleep before starting all over again!
Tour De France bicycle race in France and other countries around the world
The Tour de France is the most famous bicycle race in the world. It takes place over three weeks, with stages taking place in different cities each day. The race has been held outside France many times, including in Italy and Great Britain (where it was first held).
It’s also known as Le Tour or La Grande Boucle (the big loop).
